SCP have been involved at Newcastle Great Park for a few years and it is great to see the outline design and planning support we provided to the new extension from Newcastle Great Park to Kingston Park Road.
The attached photos show construction of the roundabouts, highway and swales that have been delivered.
This Major scheme is located to the North West of the A1 Motorway, North of Newcastle, near Newcastle Airport.
Strategically the road is designed to open up land for significant residential development, accommodating up to 800 dwellings, plus supporting a school and new retail.
SCP’s commissioning brief was initially to provide planning and technical support to the reserved matters planning application for a proposed 2km link road incorporating three roundabouts and a signalised junction, and we worked as part of a site master planning team.
SCP’s commission expanded to undertake the detailed design and construction supervision of the early highway and drainage works for this scheme.
SCP were responsible for producing feasibility studies, preliminary design and optioneering, Flood Risk Assessment and Drainage Strategy to support the planning application for the scheme.
SCP also produced the outline highway and drainage design for the scheme which included detailed modelling of the existing and proposed highway network. Key considerations included minimising the impact on the environment and in particular the minimisation of noise and detrimental air quality impacts.
The Strategic Transport Assessment and modelling of the existing and proposed highway network were undertaken by others, but SCP collaborated with their work.
SCP worked alongside the wider sub-consultant team, especially those providing specialist environmental inputs which included a Noise Assessment, Air Quality Assessment and ecology (which included an Arboriculture Assessment, Ecology Appraisal and Impact Assessment, Breeding Bird Survey, Bat Survey and a Biodiversity Mitigation and Management Plan).
The project included culverts and a large single span bridge.
Drainage design was undertaken by SCP ensuring it was SUDs compliant. SCP sought to add value by designing the Statutory Undertakers services to minimise diversions and their associated cost. SCP ensured that the earth works considered cut and fill and in doing so minimised the cost and environmental impact of export of fill material.
Overall it’s great to see this scheme being constructed and that it delivers on its aspirations.
